We were very excited to get an email last night from the Inspirational Wedding Website Emmaline Bride informing us that they had featured one of our engagement sessions on their blog! We’ve been following the blog for a long time, and it’s a real honor to see our work posted next to some great photographers and vendors.

Emmaline Bride is a website for “Handmade” DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Brides looking for great ideas for their wedding, local pros, and a Marketplace to buy and sell handmade creations. I have to be honest… I follow the blog pretty closely watching for inspiration in what colors are being used, textures, and what other couples are doing to make their wedding stand out.

So, if you’re in the dead heat of planning your wedding, and are looking for some money saving tips or cool handmade stuff…. Emmaline Bride is a great resource. They update their blog with new finds several times each day, so you’re always bound to find some new stuff!

Thanks Emma and Andrew for the kind words and the feature! Keep up the great work!

In our first Vendor Spotlight, we sit down with Travis Newell of Unique Events, a DJ and Event Services company from Iowa City. He’s doing some really cool things, and has a great knowledge of the wedding industry, so we want you to know about him!

Welcome to our first Vendor Spotlight!
No wedding is perfect, but we want your wedding to be a smooth and as wonderful as possible. In order for that to happen, unless you’re doing everything yourself, you need to surround yourself with great vendors who care as much about your wedding as you do, and who are willing to go the extra mile to provide the best possible service for your event.

One of the very important elements of your wedding day, specifically your reception, is a proper DJ or live band. Jodi and I have been involved in well over 120 weddings together, and have seen both extremes of talented and (lets be honest) talentless DJ’s. We’ve come to understand what makes an excellent DJ, and how your reception will go so much more smoothly when the person behind the microphone knows what he/she is doing. In our opinion, a good DJ should have these four main qualities:

1. Great Personality. Just like your photographer, a DJ is someone who will be spending quite a bit of time with you during your day, and as Travis will tell you, it’s important that you like them.

2. Confidence And Knowledge Of The Event. Your DJ should not have to interrupt you, the bride & groom, about anything during the event. Their job is to entertain the guests and be the Master of Ceremonies, leading the evening from one event to the next… cake cutting, bouquet and garter toss, toasts, special dances, etc. They should keep the evening moving so that guests aren’t standing around wondering what’s happening, and its the DJ’s job to make sure all the bases are covered BEFORE the wedding starts.

3. Understands How To Keep People On The Dance Floor. They can read and react to each new group of people, keeping both the slow dancers and the crazies happy while understanding that the song that worked last weekend might not work tonight.

4. Knowledge Of His/Her Equipment Your DJ must have adequate equipment for your event, understand the dynamics of the room, and know electrical circuits and what his equipment requires so he doesn’t blow a breaker in the middle of the Black Eyes Peas’ “Tonight’s Gonna Be A Good Night“.

With those points in mind, our interview this month is with Travis Newell of Unique Events, based in Iowa City, IA. We’ve had the pleasure of working with Travis in the past, and appreciate his knowledge of the industry and how he is taking Event Services to the next level. His company has recently introduced “Uplighting” to their services, and it’s the BOMB! I want him to come put some in our house for when we have people come over… it’s that cool! It’s amazing how something so simple can make your reception absolutely explode with color and style! We haven’t had the chance to work with Travis since he started the Uplighting, so we want to thank our photography pals at StudioU Photography and Shirk Photography for graciously lending us some images for the video.

Enjoy!

If you’re a fan of Travis, and Unique Events, show him some love by voting for him on KCRG’s A-List as your favorite local Music!
